Franchise Marketing

Franchise marketing, explained properly✦

Franchise marketing is two jobs wearing one brand: recruiting the people who will buy a unit, and driving customers to the units already open. Almost every guide on this topic covers one and calls it the whole subject. Here is how both halves actually work, and where they collide.

A working guide, not a sales page.

“What is franchise marketing?”

LinzEO. Franchise marketing covers franchise development (recruiting franchisees) and local unit marketing (driving customers), run from one brand architecture so the two do not compete.

The parts nobody separates

Six things that make franchise marketing its own discipline.

If you have marketed a single business, most of this looks familiar and behaves differently. These are the six places franchise marketing stops resembling regular marketing.

You are selling to two people at once

The snag

The franchisee prospect wants unit economics and support. The customer wants a service today. Same brand, opposite questions.

The fix

Give each audience its own architecture and its own content, connected by brand but not competing for the same queries.

You do not control most of your own marketing

The snag

Franchisees run their own local spend, their own social, and sometimes their own websites. Brand consistency is a negotiation, not a setting.

The fix

Centralize what has to be consistent (schema, listings, location pages) and template what is genuinely local.

The brand fund is a political instrument

The snag

Franchisees pay into it and want to see it spent where they operate. National campaigns can be excellent and still feel like a tax to a unit in a market you did not run ads in.

The fix

Fund the layer that lifts every unit at once. Organic and local visibility compound and are visible market by market.

Territory rules shape the keyword map

The snag

Two units near each other chasing the same terms is not competition, it is your own brand splitting its rankings.

The fix

Map keywords to territories the way the agreements map markets, so each location owns its own demand.

Franchisee recruitment is a six-month research project

The snag

Nobody buys a franchise from an ad. They read, compare, validate with existing owners, and ask AI what it thinks.

The fix

Publish the substance a serious buyer needs: investment ranges, real support, honest validation. Rank for the research, not just the request form.

Aggregators sit between you and both audiences

The snag

Franchise portals intercept your prospects. Service aggregators intercept your customers. Both rent you back your own demand.

The fix

Own the queries the aggregators rank for, at brand level and at unit level, so you are the destination rather than the listing.

Franchise marketing done well is one architecture serving two audiences. Done badly, it is two budgets fighting.

Common questions

Franchise marketing, answered.

What is franchise marketing?+

It is the marketing a franchise system runs across two audiences: franchise development, which recruits people to buy and open units, and local unit marketing, which drives customers to the units already trading. Both run under one brand, which is what makes it a distinct discipline rather than ordinary marketing at scale.

What is the difference between franchise marketing and franchise development marketing?+

Franchise development marketing is the recruitment half: reaching prospective franchisees and moving them from research to a signed agreement. Franchise marketing is the whole picture, recruitment plus the consumer-facing work that keeps open units busy. (I run both, as one franchise marketing agency engagement.)

What is a typical franchise marketing fee?+

Most systems charge franchisees an ongoing brand or ad fund fee, commonly 1 to 4 percent of gross revenue, separate from royalties. The exact figure and what it may be spent on are set out in the FDD, so read Item 11 rather than relying on any general number, including this one.

Who is responsible for local marketing, the franchisor or the franchisee?+

Usually both, split by the agreement. The franchisor typically owns brand, national campaigns, and the technical layer. The franchisee owns local spend and community presence, often with a required minimum. The systems that work best centralize anything that has to be consistent and template the rest.

Does franchise marketing need a separate development website?+

Frequently, yes. Running recruitment and consumer content on one domain makes both harder to rank, because the site sends mixed signals about what it is for. A separate development site gives the opportunity its own authority and its own audience. The architecture work behind that is franchise SEO, and the pipeline it feeds is franchise lead generation.
